Um have you ever been to the Orkneys?
Sorry about the very long break between posts, but with the dissertation and everything, I just didn't have the time or the motivation. So I was watching NOVA the other day. Yes I watch NOVA they have some awesome stuff and yes I am a giant dork. But more to the point, it was about Stone Henge. Now I like most of the world thinks its kind of amazing how ancient Britons built this massive stone structure, and the new discovery of a wood henge something like 10 miles from Stone Henge, where there is an extensive neolithic settlement. But what really got to me was this stuff English archaeologist who kept coming back to the fact that this new settlement near Stone Henge, was super important because it was the first neolithic settlement found in England. And how this was vitally important to the understanding of the Neolithic peoples of Britain. My one response to his repeated claims was, "Yeah so what, who cares if this is the first settlement found in England there is an entire ISLAND chain called the ORKNEYS in Scotland COVERED in ruins which are OLDER! Not only that but in Scotland there are hundreds literally hundreds of sites spread across the country which are as old as if not older than the new one found in England, so again I ask who cares about England they seem to have developed later what makes them so special?
